Hi!
Well you'll notice I finally know my address, but I will only be there
for a few weeks more. After that it's on the road again and I can't wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The plan is to catch a train to Paris, stay for 3-5 days and then start
an inter-rail pass. This will give me 1 months unlimited rail travel all
over Europe for about £280 (A$560), the benefit of being in the UK
so long is that I am now eligable for this. I then plan to take in Mont
St. Michael in France, Interlaken in Switzerland (for some canyoning),
Berlin, Warsaw and Sofia in Bulgaria and anywhere else in between that
takes my fancy. From Sofia (where I expect my pass will run out) I plan
to travel to Istambul and spend about 2 weeks in Turkey before heading
for Dublin in mid to late November where I have some friends who will be
graduating around that time. I plan to drop in on some people I met last
year along the way if I can get in contact with them. Well, that's the
plan, but you know what they say about mice and men.
I lost my wallet a week ago which was a real downer, and getting the Visa card replaced is looking like being a big hassle. They don't want to send it to me until I get back and won't let my parents collect it for me, even with power of attorney! So I've got some calls to make! See ya, Julian

The two best shows of my life (possibly)
Wed, 27 Aug 1997 08:44:34 +1000 (EST)
Hi ho First let me say this, if you havn't seen 'Romeo and Juliet' the recent movie, DO IT! This movie is quite probably the best I have ever seen! It is just wonderful. The story, well it's Shakespeare and boy did he know how to write 'em! The cinematogrophy is just beautiful and full of well crafted scenes and scenery. The acting is great, and the sound track is mind blowing. I would recommend it to anyone!
Secondly, U2
I bought my ticket for this concert in March (I think, any way that's not important) and I have been eagerly waiting for it ever since. Last Friday I caught the night bus to London (2230 to 0630)) which, as with all overnight bus rides, was hell! Then after a quick breakfast I headed straight for the Stadium. I got there at 8am and joined the few people who had camped out over-night. And there I sat (well, I took a break for lunch and the usual things) until the gates opened at 1630. One guy in the que had been to the last 22 concerts! Yes it was a long time to wait, but it was worth it. I had one person between me and the barrier at the very front!!! WOW!
The concert was fantastic. It was energy from the word 'POP'! I was swept away by the excitement of the crowd and was dazed by the realisation that, no, this was NOT TV, yes, that IS Bono and not just an image (all philosophical discussions aside). To be honest, where we were was not the best spot to be, i.e. right at the front. It is hard to explain where the best spot to be is precisely, but 'at the end of the cat walk' gives you the best idea. But as if I was going to let that spoil my fun. No way! I was there, jumping and singing my heart out all the way, camera flashing in my hand. these little disposables are great! I got a few really good shots and quite a few "do you see that blue smudge there? That's Bono." shots! It is hard to believe that this concert, one of two in London was NOT sold out. I can't understand it...
I had a ball, and at the end, after taking two hours to get home on public transport, I was completely exhausted. they played solidly for two hours, the only break being when the Edge sang a little Kareoke in the middle. 'Day dream believer' will never sound the same again!
I believe it costs both arms and a leg to see the show in Aust. I also heard rumors about the ticket sales being suspended because of this. Is it true? $80-$160 for a ticket is outrageous! The only reason I would pay it is if it was my ONLY chance to see them, but it woould make me think twice, believe me, that's saying something! It is disgusting and the promoter should be shot for it. Can't someone write to the consumer affairs people or something? What about the pricing authority? Don't just sit there and be ripped off, DO SOMETHING!! Get together a petition and send it to the band and the promoter. I'm sure the band know nothing about the price of the tickets as this sort of thing is usually set by the promoter. i don't think they would be too pleased either!
Well, that's all for now. I don't want to tell you any more about the concert because either a)( you're going to see it and I don't want to spoil it b) you've been and you've heard it all already or c) you're not interested! :^(
So I'll leave it at that for now and get back to work!
Yours staring at the sun,
Julian

So what is this 'marble' chocolate stuff anyway?

Hello and thankyou to everyone who replied to my cry for help. While everyone seemed to get the messages I sent, they all bounced back at me anyway and I thought they didn't get through! I've been trying to mail all week but it seemed like the server was always down when I was at a cafe. I'm now at work wasting the Royal Banks hard earned cash ( well they print their own don't they?).
BIG NEWS! I am no longer at the hostel. The others at the hostel decided that the midnight shifts I am doing at the bank were going to be too difficult to work around so they found someone else to work the shifts. Since that is most of this week and the hostel closes the week after, they are putting him on for the rest of the time they are open. This ment that I would have to pay rent to stay there, and while the boss is a nice guy he is a bit tight and I was going to have to pay £77 p/w to stay there! That is alot more than I would pay if I was to find somone to share a flat with, so I persued other options. One of my friends has kindly offered me a bed in their box room for the month and only wants £10 p/w for bills. Suits me fine! It is about 20min walk from the hostel so I am still pretty central.
So, time to rub out that old address and put in a new one. Only problem is I don't know it yet! The phone number is listed below. Don't worry about any mail or anything sent there as I will get it passed on while the hostel is open.
My shifts this week are 1600-2400 Mon. to Thurs. and I then have a 4-day weekend!! You BEWDY! Just in time for the last 2 days of the festival!
I'm not too upset about the hostel job. Naturally I would like to have stayed there longer, the people and the money were great, but I now have a bit more time to myself and i can catch up on some sleep! Also, the people at the hostel could have said no from the start and then I wouldn't have had the money or met the people there! So really, in a round about way, I'm ahead!
Since I'm on'till midnight again tomorrow I'll write some more then! I've just got to tell you about the U2 concert!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See you! Julian

Flat out like a lizard drinking...

Dear loved ones
This connection is really slow so please excuse the typo's. Well like the
title says I am now paying the price for earning money, I have no time
to myself, well not as much as I would like. It's a pain but I now have
the biggest social network I've had since leaving home, and I havn't got
enought time to enjoy it!!??!!
Oh well, I'm making the most of what I've got. Last Monday I took a bus out to Fort William, where I met up with Gavin and we hiked up the tallest peak in the UK, Ben Nevis. (for those of you who've never been over here, nearly all of the mountains are called Ben, it's the Scottish equivalent of Mt..). It took three hours (I repeat 3 HOURS!) to hike to the top, and while I never doubted that I would make it, I thought that I may not be able to walk again for a week! Wow, not for the unfit! It showed me just how out of shape I am. But when we got to the top the view was breathtaking! We started out quite late in the day, about 3.30pm, so most of the tourists were coming down as we went up. This ment that there were about 5 other people at the top when wer got there. This was great because we just walked to the back of the 'plateau' (?) and got away from them. And the silence was divine. There wasn't a sound. Gavin and I spent about half an hour just not talking and the ONLY thing we could hear was the very infrequent bleat of some sheep on a distant ridge. Absolutely amazing! I took heaps of photos, I hope they come out well.
What else have I been up to? Well, I went to the Edinburgh Tattoo. This is an annual event, something of a military band show.
** I am sending this now as I have justlost the connection to my account for the fourth time for this message. I will try and continue this later. Sorry guys!***

Sorry to keep you in suspense. The winner is...

Hi y'all!
You are talking to one of the newest members of the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Yes, despite the dramatic cut in pay (I'll get too that in a tick) I am
noow gearing up too open the help desk ont an unsuspecting public! OOr
shoould that be that they are preparing to unleash the public oontoo an
unsuspecting me!!! Let me apoologise for the doouble 'oo's. This keybooard
seems too have a thing foor them. Well, each too their oown...
That money quip was because they are no longer ooffering me an oobscene amoount of money for an easy job, but a lesser amount foor an interesting one. The job is the same but the pay rate I was toold (£8-10 per hoour) has turned intoo about £5 per hour. I dissapointment, but a more realistic wage and still the best offer I have. But the local internet cafe is e-mailing me and asking me to come in for an interview. I don't expect the offer to be any better, but I just want to hear about it any way.
I am still at the hostel, it looks like I might be able to arrange the shifts there around the Royal bank job and everyone else at the hostel is willing to help and be a bit flexible about the hours. the work is Ok so far, alot of admin. to get through and we still havn't seen the system working yet because the latest version is still being tested and installed. BUT don't go telling anyone because is supposed to be up and running, well... it is really... that's a touchy subject! So soon I will have some money rolling in and not a heck of a lot of time to spend it in. I like to think the time I have will be quality, not quantity.
Well, time is short and so is money so I'm off. Please note the new address etc. The phone number will change shortly to the private line, not the business line, so STAY TUNED!!
P, L&A Jules

Hi friend.
Well, as they say, it never rains but it pours! Today I had THREE job offers.
This is going to be a bit of a brain storm about them and which I will
take(??!?!!?)
(the numbers will/should have pound symbols infront of 'em, some of you might see something else, trust me, it's in pounds..)
The first is a simple job, sales assistant in a camping store. Nice and simple really. £3.20 an hour for 37.5 hours a week Mon to Sat. or 41 if I work Sunday too. It fits my night portering job so I could do both. That would mean about £120 p.w. with accomodation and food taken care of by the night portering. This is the least likely option, but it might help out if I decide to take the next option...
OPTION 2: I have been offered a Stage Management job for a show which will be running over the fringe festival. It will be in the Botanical Gardens here and is the story of Dr. Livingston ('I presume..') performed by an African Company. WOW!!!!! The job sounds great, but lets look at the details. It's for one month 23/7 - 24/8 and the pay is £500 flat. That's it, no hourly rate or anything, the hours will be many and varied! It would mean leaving the portering job and moving out of the hostel because of the hours. As a bonus, and the only reason I am even considering it, I will get accomodation thrown in, sharing a flat with the other people putting the show together, and possibly the odd meal here and there. In the mean time I could take the camping store job and just dump it after 2 weeks or so, just for the money. All of this makes it an attractive package. I would be a little out of my depth to start with, having never managed a show before, but I'm sure I could handle it. I would take this right away but......
OPTION 3: I have been offered a 8-16 month job working for the Royal Bank of Scotland, helping them troubleshoot Europes first internet banking system. Pay is a VERY attractive £8-10 an hour, 35 or so hours a week. NOT BAD! The work is 8am to 4pm or 4pm to 12am, four or five days a week. It's a little undecided yet, but at worst (£8 p/h for 35 hours) I still gross £280 a week!! Even if I pay £50 per week rent for a room in a shared flat and spend £30 a week on food, that's still about £200 a week!! It means leaving the portering job and finding a place to live which would be tricky for a while, but that's no trouble.
So For LOVE or MONEY? No that's not completely fair. The trouble shooting would be good, an intellectual challenge, the first I've had in a while! So.. Work on the first internet banking system in Europe, or Stage manage a show for the Edinburgh Festival??
Let me tell you, it's tough! But the money is VERY tempting.... and I do need it. AND I have to make up my mind in the next 24 hours! Hey, NO PRESSURE!!!!! like hell.....
Either way, one thing is sure, I've got to move out of the hostel shortly...
AAARRRGGGHHHHHHH!!!!
Ok I'm off to pull my hair out. Any advice will be gratefully recieved, read and possibly completely ignored, but drop me a line any way!
thanks for listening guys here's
to the cricket on Saturday, Aust. Vs. Scotland! Look for me in the crowd!
Jules
